Week 1 B: Social Media Use Today

Social Media Use Today as a Business Owner

Did you know? According to google the average amount of time spent by an individual on social media is 2 hours & 20 mins, this can vary based on gender, ae and country. With that being said it is sage to say we spend a lot of our spare time scrolling on Instagram, TikTok, Threads, X, etc.

Social Media has changed the way we go about our daily lives. Specifically the way we do business, the way we buy, the way we get our news, the way we stay "relevant," etc. Being a business owner myself, I find that I mainly use social media today for business purposes. Prior to running my business, I used to use social media to catch up with friends, post my life updates, etc, now I hardly ever go on my personal Instagram, TikTok, Fb page. With social media being a huge driver of traffic and sales for most businesses, I knew  t was crucial for me to make it a part of my day to day business practices.

I will admit I was late to the social media game when I started my floral business and it has hindered my growth a bit. At the start of my floral business, I was so focused on the logistics, I forgot to take into account my clients and who I was serving. I missed out on a greater part of a social media growth spurt which was that period during Covid. I refer to it as such because people where quarantined, on stay at home orders and social media ways a means of staying connected and in the know. There was a lot of content being created and at this time didn't have to be beautiful for it to make a impact, so many unconventional posts were going viral!

Following that time period, in my particular industry there was a huge take off in the number of weddings, events, and celebrations to be had due to the amount of postponed events and weddings during covid. Without a beautiful Instagram showcasing past events and floral designs, how would anyone book you? I grew doubtful of my business at this time because I felt like I had really hurt my businesses potential growth.

What Does Social Media Look like for me today?

With Social media being something that is forever evolving, I try to stay up to date on any changes. I mostly use Instagram for my business, and try to make sure my page is aesthetically pleasing, helpful, and a good representation of my brand. I feel like because the algorithm is always changing, I have yet to crack the code for real growth. Lately my goal has been to post daily hoping that this will increase visibility, engagement and following. As a business owner. student, Mom & dog mom, my challenge has and will be consistency.
